What Does A Planner Do?

Hey everyone, it’s me Brooke from Pink With Envy Event Planning Services and I am back again with Bridal Gush.

I usually get a variety of answers when I meet someone and ask “Who is your wedding planner?” The most popular responses tend to be “Oh, my mom is doing that” or “I have an Aunt Sally who is very organized” or “My venue has someone to set stuff up already” or it’s usually some other vendor who has decided that they want to use planning as an add-on service that they can do as an upcharge their clients.

When hiring vendors you want to make sure they excel in their respective areas and aren’t trying to sell you on things outside of their wheelhouse.   Also in my fellow vendors’ defense, many end up having to take on roles that are outside of what you hired them to do simply because a couple hasn’t hired a planner and there are so many things that need to get done that weren’t pre-planned or even thought of before the day of the event. This, at the end of the day, takes away from what you originally hired those people to do!

Let’s get back to your Aunt Sally too…Yes, we know other people besides ourselves are organized and probably have planned some sort of event before. However, do you really want the people you love and trust most, to be worried and running around on your special day? Or do you want them to be present in the moment with you enjoying the day and making memories? The saddest story I tell is that of a photographer friend who met with one of their clients and their parents. The mom started to get teary looking at the photos. When asked what was wrong, the mom said: “When did that happen?” “Why wasn’t I there for that?!” and began pointing to various moments captured in the pictures. The couple had to politely remind her that she was so busy running around putting out centerpieces, running errands, and taking care of everything, that she missed some of her daughter’s most special moments of the day. Here are just a few of the things a wedding planner can provide you during your planning process:

  • Pre-wedding – We can provide vendor recommendations, creative insight, and ways to save you time and money. We are your advocate, sounding board, and resource center to help you enjoy the process and make the most effective use of your time.
  • The ability to be present during the day – You have invested lots of time and money. This is a once in a lifetime event. Don’t get bogged down with tasks on your wedding day that rob you of joy.
  • Timeline creation- If you want true peace of mind, there is nothing like a well put-together timeline that provides the when and how everything comes together, minute-by-minute.
  • Main point of contact for the day- The only thing you should be concerned about on your wedding day, is showing up and looking amazing! You don’t want to be answering calls and texts from vendors and various people while you are getting ready and enjoying time with your friends and family.

By hiring a planner with an excellent reputation, you are ultimately giving yourself (and your family) the best gift you can on your special day…peace of mind. You are allowing those who have invested the most in you and your day to actually enjoy it and spend it with you too. Make sure you look at reviews on sites like WeddingWire or The Knot. You can read what previous clients have had to say about their experience with a planner.
